MCLE Basics
With few exceptions, most attorneys who are actively practicing law in California must take 25 hours of Minimum Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) every three years and file a report with the State Bar. The California MCLE Podcast provides the full 25 hours including all "participatory MCLE credits.
Other special requirements:

At least four hours of legal ethics

At least one hour on competence issues

At least one hour in an area called the Recognition and Elimination of Bias in the Legal Profession and Society

California MCLE Compliance
CALIFORNIA MCLE COMPLIANCE GROUPS
Attorneys are assigned to a compliance group based on their last names and remain in that same group, even if the attorney subsequently changes his/her last name.
Group 1 (A-G)
Attorneys with last names beginning with A-G | Compliance period: 2/1/16 - 1/31/19 | Deadline to report: Feb. 1, 2019
Group 2 (H-M)
Attorneys with last names beginning with H-M | Compliance period: 2/1/18 - 1/31/21| Deadline to report: Feb. 1, 2021
Group 3 (N-Z)
Attorneys with last names beginning with N-Z | Compliance period: 2/1/17 - 1/31/20 | Deadline to report: Feb. 1, 2020
